Accessing Art in a Digital Age

Accessing ArtIn early Summer we teamed up with three leading authorities to explore the effect technology was having and may have in the future on how we access art and how art is promoted.

Amit Sood, responsible for creating and running the Google Art Project, explained how his mission was to bring art closer to everyone and to allow people to examine art they particularly like at any time of day or night on whatever technology they were using. Amit provided a mesmerising demonstration as to just how close you can actually get to some of the worlds most coveted pieces.

Matthew Slotover, founder with Amanda Sharp, of Frieze magazine from which sprang the amazing world-renowned Frieze Art Fair, came at the subject from a slightly different angle, explaining how he felt that one really needed to see art ‘live and close up’, sense it and let it affect one’s emotions.  But he admitted to being a bit of a techie and to Frieze now employing technology more and more in how it operated and in how it enabled people to access the exhibition via virtual tours.

The final speaker was Sion Whellens of Calverts who specialise in fine art printing.  Sion brought examples of the sort of work that is being produced these days using high-quality materials, unusual printing techniques and even edible paper!

The conclusion of the event was that all forms of promotion and access to art can sit side-by-side and together can enhance our appreciation of art, and bring it to a wider audience.

The evening was hosted at the up-and-coming Maria Stenfors Gallery in Wren Street, WC1. Images and footage from the event can bee seen by following this link: https://westbury.bizzbug.com/spaces/WestburyArt/index
